The standard socket for a ratchet can be used in combination with square-shaped, hexagonal or octagonal screw heads. The new design (10, 11) can be also used for tightening or loosening a screw head with a star-shaped or toothed outer contour. It is provided with a number of ribs (13), preferably twelve, positioned axially along the inner surface. Each of the ribs (13) has a rounded crest (15), the spaces between the ribs (16) are designed with a plane bottom.
