PURPOSE: To provide a method for refining 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid, by which high-purity 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid can be obtained in slight load on a refining apparatus without causing cost-up and complexity of processes. CONSTITUTION: This method for refining 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid comprises a process for reducing a crude 2,6-naphthalene-dicarboxylic acid containing 6-formyl-2-naphthoic acid with hydrogen and a process for washing the reduction product with an alcohol. The reduction process is preferably carried out by bringing the crude 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid and hydrogen into contact with a hydrogenation catalyst in a liquid phase, particularly in a water phase.
