A web pleating apparatus comprising a first series of converging elongate spaced protuberances (29, 36) and a second series of elongate spaced protuberances (30, 37) converging in the machine direction. The first series of protuberances (29, 36) and said second series of protuberances (30, 37) interleave in the Z-direction. The interleaved protuberances (29, 30, 36, 37) are capable of folding a pleatable web (20) into a generally pleated pattern of machine direction pleats upon contact with said first and second series of protuberances (29, 30, 36, 37).
