The gamma detector (1) of measurement of the state of fill or density has a transmission unit (4) and a rod-shaped receiver unit (5) for radio-active radiation with a detector unit (8,9) in each end area (6,7) of the receiver unit. A regulation/evaluation unit determines the time difference between the input of a measurement impulse produced by a gamma photon in the receiver unit in each of the two detector units and evaluates the pulse width and amplitude of each measurement impulse. Finally, the regulation/evaluation unit corrects the measured time difference on the basis of the evaluated values. From a number of corrected measurement impulses an intensity profile is established along the receiver unit and from this the state of fill (F) is determined.
