PURPOSE: A projection type optical device is provided to extend the life span of the optical device, and expand color gamut by adapting a red auxiliary light source, thereby improving color brightness. CONSTITUTION: A projection type optical device includes a main light source(201) emitting a non-polarized white light; a first optical part(202) homogenizing the distribution of the emitted light and condensing the light by polarizing the non-polarized light; a first dichroic red reflective mirror(206) reflecting only red lights in the lights coming out through the first optical; a red auxiliary light source(301) emitting a red light having a specific range of red wavelength; a red filter mirror(208) reflecting the lights reflected from the dichroic red reflective mirror and transmitting the light emitted from the red auxiliary light source; a red liquid crystal panel(209) transmitting or reflecting the red light after forming an image by receiving the red light reflected or transmitted from the red filter mirror; and a second optical part(203) dividing the lights transmitted through the dichroic red reflective mirror into green lights and blue lights, and forming the image on each green and blue liquid crystal panel(213,219) through reflection and condensation.
