The present invention provides a production method of pyrrolidone carboxylic acid or a salt thereof, which includes bringing glutamic acid or a salt thereof into contact with high-temperature high-pressure water having a temperature of above 100° C. and not higher than 300° C., and a pressure higher than the vapor pressure of water at this temperature. The present invention affords efficient production and supply of pyrrolidone carboxylic acid or a salt thereof from glutamic acid or a salt thereof.
