The invention relates to catalysts consisting of cerium oxide and up to 30 mol % of at least one of the elements Fe, Dy, Hf, Cr, V, and to the use of the same. Said catalysts are suitable for the catalytic combustion of organic compounds, hydrocarbons, CO, and especially methane, with air or oxygen.
