A trimerisation catalyst system includes a chromium source and a ligand comprising a substituted five membered carbocyclic ring or derivatives thereof. The five membered carbocyclic ring may be a substituted cyclopentadiene derivative of the general formula, C5RnH6-n, wherein each R is a substituent and n is an integer from 1 to 5.
