PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a collective magnetic tape unit with a function to detect the defective initial positioning of a magazine and an automatic recovery function. SOLUTION: A sensor 4 at a magazine loading slot 2 counts an edge flag provided on the side surface of the magazine for every cell during the loading operation of the magazine, and the loading operation is terminated when the number of all cells 7 of the magazine is counted. At the moment, the state of the sensor 3 indicating that the magazine in the magazine loading slot 2 is positioned at a correct position is confirmed to terminate a magazine setting operation. Meanwhile, when the sensor 3 does not detect the termination of the magazine positioning, the discharge operation of the magazine is carried out to discharge the magazine toward the position where the magazine can be taken out. The loading operation of the magazine is automatically carried out again when the discharge operation is normally carried out. Moreover, in the case that a magazine discharge is not terminated normally or in other cases, 'abnormal termination' is displayed on an operator panel 8.
