PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for body recognition, which is small in calculation quantity and good in recognition precision. SOLUTION: The device is equipped with a moving picture decoding part 110 which decodes data generated by encoding a moving picture signal, a background image generation part which generates a background image according to the encoded information from the moving picture decoding part 110 and a reproduced image signal generated by the moving picture decoding part 110, and a body recognition part 116 which sets a small area for detecting the feature quantity of a body and recognizes the body in the moving picture by matching the reproduced image signal with the background image.
