PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved semiconductor laser. SOLUTION: The semiconductor laser, a laser module, and their manufacturing methods are disclosed. The semiconductor laser is provided with an active region, having a first refractive index and at least one confining layer, having a second refractive index smaller than the first refractive index. In addition, an anti-guiding layer having a third refractive index lower than the second refractive index is arranged so that the confining layer may be positioned between the active region and anti-guiding layer. Moreover, a clad layer having a fourth refractive index higher than the third refractive index is arranged so that the anti-guide layer may be positioned between the clad and confinement layers.
