PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display panel driving method, etc., in which satisfactory image quality is maintained in the case of using a display panel for a long time. SOLUTION: When an image signal is inputted to a video display device, an image corresponding to gradation is displayed on a PDP(plasma display panel) 15, which is under the control of a controlling part 19 by the actions of an A/D converter 10, a display data generating part 11, an address driver 12, an X-sustained driver 13 and a Y-sustained driver 14. An APL calculating part 16 calculates an average luminance level(APL) within one field, on the basis of image data outputted from the A/D converter 10, and the number of accumulated light-emitting times calculating part 17 uses the APL to calculate the number of accumulated light-emitting times. Meanwhile, an accumulated use time detecting part 18 detects accumulated use time obtained by accumulating utilization time in the video display device. A control part 19 appropriately controls the voltage value or application timing of each drive pulse in the X and Y-sustained drivers 13 and 14, so as to compensate for changes due to aging of the PDP 15, on the basis of the time of accumulated light-emitting times or the accumulated utilization time.
