SOLUTION: This occupant protection device comprises a trigger signal generating means for generating a trigger signal when an acceleration signal responding to an acceleration acting on a vehicle is over a first threshold value, a threshold value generating means receiving the trigger signal from the trigger signal generating means and generating a variable threshold value, a speed changing means receiving the trigger signal from the trigger signal generating means, integrating the acceleration signal, and generating a speed signal, and a comparing means for comparing the speed signal from the speed changing means with the variable threshold value from the threshold value generating means, and generating an operation signal when the speed signal is over the variable threshold value.
