PURPOSE: A braking apparatus of a rope for an elevator is provided to stop the elevator before moving up and down the elevator by pressing and griping the rope momentarily with shutting off power and operating a push plate in an emergency. CONSTITUTION: A rope braking device of an elevator is composed of two push plates(44a,44b) pressing a rope(2) with moving back and forth; a main body(30) restricting linear motion of the push plates; nut shafts(59a) installed in the main body and an auxiliary body(50) to drive push plates; wheels(70a,70b) rotating the nut shafts; tension springs inserted to wheels and fitted to spring fixing plates; a main latch(77) rotating or restricting wheels; an auxiliary latch(80) reversing the main latch; a fixing release unit releasing a latch(79) and the main latch; and an inclination installation unit mounting the main body in a beam with inclining. The safety is improved by stopping the elevator with gripping the rope in an emergency.
