PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new disinfectant capable of efficiently disinfecting untreated sewage containing bacteria of the Escherichia group, etc., discharged from a sewage treating plant, a pumping station or a rainwater discharge port to public water areas in the rainy weather, especially overflow water in the sewage treating plant at a low cost. SOLUTION: This disinfectant is characterized as comprising hybrobromous acid or a hypobromite. In a preferred mode, the hypobromite disinfectant can be formed by mixing a bromide of a metal element with hypochlorous acid or its salt. The method and apparatus for disinfecting wastewater using the disinfectant are further provided.
