A polyhydroxy material in particulate form is treated to introduce an ion-exchange group and a non-polar substituent group. Examples include sulphethoxybenzyl cellulose, benzylated, aminoethyl cellulose, ethyl triethylamino ethyl cellulose, methyl sulphethoxy cellulose, methyl carboxymethyl cellulose, epichlorhydrin-phenyl sulphethoxy cellulose. Starch is reacted with epichlorohydrin and phenol and the resulting product is treated with sodium 2-bromoethane sulphonate to give epichlorhydrin-phenyl sulphethoxy starch. Polyvinyl alcohol is first treated with epichlorhydrin and phenol and then sodium 2-bromoethane sulphonate to give epichlorhydrinphenyl sulphethoxy polyvinyl alcohol. |
