PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a polyester having excellent continuous moldability over a long period and giving a molded article, especially a heat-resistant hollow molded article having excellent transparency and dimensional stability with heat and small variation of crystallization rate. SOLUTION: The polyester is produced by contacting chips of a polyester containing ethylene terephthalate as a main recurring unit under flowing condition with at least one member selected from a member made of a polyolefin resin, a member made of a polyamide resin, a member made of a polyacetal resin and a member made of a polybutylene terephthalate resin. In the production process, the ratio A of the surface area (cm<2> ) of the member to the contact treatment quantity (ton/hr) of the polyester chips per unit time satisfies the formula A=[surface area (cm<2> ) of the member]/[the contact treatment quantity (ton/hr) of the polyester per unit time]=6-5,000.
