The invention relates to a barium magnesium aluminate, containing europium, characterised in being a nitride. The above is prepared by a method, characterised by thermal treatment of a barium magnesium aluminate, containing europium, under a gas stream containing ammonia. The invention further relates to a barium magnesium aluminate resulting from the calcination, in the presence of oxygen, of the said aluminate nitride. Said aluminate may be used as luminophore in plasma screens or tri-chromatic lamps.
