A fluid cooled cylinder block (1) for an IC engine has the supply (8) and collecting (9) ducts incorporated into the cast block, with the collecting duct above the supply duct. Two cooling spaces (5, 6), set above one another, are provided between the block and the cylinder lines and are connected to the distribution duct by apertures (15, 11). The lower cooling space is connected to the upper cooling space and the upper space is vented to the cylinder block flange via a venting aperture (19) on the opposite side of the cylinder to the distribution and collecting ducts. The vented coolant is passed into the collecting duct via a second aperture in the cylinder block flange.
