To test the engine-brake characteristics of the internal combustion engine, the variable turbine geometry of the exhaust gas turbo charger (3) is moved from the open position into the ram position. The firing of the engine is maintained at least temporarily. An engine state parameter is measured and compared with a predetermined threshold. If the deviation exceeds a permissible range, an error signal is generated.
