PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a friction engaging device which releases a shock when a friction plate is pressed and never enlarges in axial direction. SOLUTION: The device includes a larger diameter tubular body 62 on which an outside engaged groove 63 is formed in axial direction of inner peripheral face, a smaller diameter tubular body 61 which is disposed inside the larger diameter tubular body 62 and on which an inside engaged groove 64 is formed in axial direction of outer peripheral face, a plurality of annular larger diameter friction plates 65 moveably axially equipped on the larger diameter tubular body 62 and a plurality of annular smaller diameter friction plates moveably axially equipped on the smaller diameter tubular body 61 and is provided with impinged and abutted parts 65b, 66b inclining toward another same kind of a plate axially adjacent to the outer peripheral part on the larger diameter friction plate 65 and to the inner peripheral part on the smaller diameter friction plate 66. When the friction plates 65, 66 are pressed, the impinged and abutted parts 65b, 66b are respectively compressed and deformed and the friction engaging device can smoothly be tightened in order to press and abut the adjacent friction plates 65, 66.
