PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating a blast furnace, by which service life of a furnace body can be extended by educing local wear of the side wall and the bottom part at the furnace bottom positioned below a tuyere in the blast furnace. SOLUTION: When molten iron is tapped from a molten iron tapping hole 2a in the blast furnace 1, a relative heat load as the ratio of the heat load to an average heat load, is obtained on the side wall part in the furnace body and the furnace bottom part positioned below the tuyere in the blast furnace 1. When a portion where the obtained relative heat load exceeds a prescribed value of >1, is caused, the molten iron tapping is started from two molten iron tapping holes 2a, 2b of the blast furnace 1, thereby eliminating the portion, where the relative heat load becomes >1.
