PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the operation voltage, to realize a high contrast, and to stabilize the operation at a high temperature with respect to an HV-FLCD(Half- V ferroelectric liquid crystal display device). SOLUTION: Some material has a system of (isotropic phase)-(chiral nematic liquid crystal phase)-(chiral smectic C liquid crystal phase) in phase transition. This material is characterized by the absence of the smectic A phase on the way. It is known that an electrooptical cell using ferroelectric liquid crystal like this shows asymmetrical electrooptic characteristics. They are called the Half-V shaped switching phenomenon. A ferroelectric liquid crystal display device which brings about this phenomenon is abbreviated to HV-FLCD. The azimuth angle surface anchoring strength of liquid crystal molecules is controlled to provide the HV-FLCD and an element showing stable operation at a high temperature, which are characterized by reduction of the operation voltage and improvement of asymmetry, namely, improvement of operation characteristics such as reduction of light leakage in the case of dark part operation. |
