PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical isolator which can be mounted on a surface, increased in heat resistance temperature, and improved in reliability, and to eliminate the need for adjusting an optical axis of a polarizer at the time of assembly. SOLUTION: This is an optical isolator which is provided with a 1st polarizer 18a, a Faraday element 12, and a 2nd polarizer 18b arranged in this order in the direction of the optical axis, and which is also provided with a permanent magnet 10 outside of the Faraday element for applying a magnetic field to the Faraday element in the optical axis direction. The permanent magnet is U-shaped, and the Faraday element is fixedly attached in the space inside of the magnet into a Faraday rotor assembly body 16. On the other hand, the 1st and 2nd polarizers are fixedly attached on a holder plate 20 with an interval in between to be formed into a polarizer assembly body 24. Then, the Faraday rotor assembly body and the polarizer assembly body are combined into one body by assembling them so that the end faces of both leg parts of the permanent magnet are faced to the upper face of the holder plate.
