PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a residual capacity calculation method whereby the residual capacity can be calculated accurately. SOLUTION: Current/voltage characteristics L1 and L2 of a battery are obtained on the basis of a current and a terminal voltage at a charging/ discharging time. A maximum output of the battery is calculated on the basis of the current/voltage characteristics L1 and L2 and minimum allowable voltages Vmin(T1) and Vmin(T2) of the terminal voltage at a discharge time. The residual capacity of the battery is calculated on the basis of a maximum output- discharge state correlation and the calculated maximum output. At this time, the minimum allowable voltages Vmin(T1) and Vmin(T2) are set in accordance with battery temperatures T1 and T2, and the maximum output of the battery is calculated on the basis of IV characteristic lines L1 and L2 at each of the set minimum allowable voltages Vmin(T1) and Vmin(T2) and each of the temperatures T1 and T2.
