Phenols of formula <FORM:1034500/C2/1> wherein each R is H, methyl, phenyl or methylsubstituted phenyl are methylated in the o-position by reaction with methanol in presence of MgO catalyst, while maintaining a catalyst bed temperature of 475-600 DEG C.ALSO:Catalyst compositions used for methylating phenols by reaction with methanol comprise (a) Mgo with up to 10 at. % ZnD, PbO or ZnCr2O4, (b) MgO with one of the ingredients sulphate, phosphate, nitrate, chloride, molybdate, borate, methoxide (optionally with carbonate), alumina, silica, BeO2 or cations Zn++, Pb++, Fe++, Hg++, Co++, Y+++, Ag+, Cr+++, Na+, Cu++, Ni++, (c) MgO supported on calcium silicate or fused Al2O3 made by coating them with Mg methyl carbonate, acetate and methoxide, followed by thermal decomposition.
