PURPOSE: A device and a method for controlling a backlight of a liquid crystal display device are provided to automatically carry out the backlight control operation in inverse proportion to the environmental strength within the multi-stepped control ranges set according to the environmental light strength, and battery or external power use. CONSTITUTION: A device for controlling a backlight of a liquid crystal display device includes a reflection type LCD(11) for displaying signals on a screen by using a backlight(13) and external natural light, a light detecting unit for detecting the strength of environmental light, a power supply unit(17) for supplying battery power or external power to the backlight as driving power, a power source detecting unit(20) for detecting whether the battery power or the external power is applied, and a control unit(16) for controlling the power supply unit to apply the backlight driving current in inverse proportion to the environmental light strength within the control range of the backlight according to the environmental light strength and the power sources.
