PURPOSE: A high density optical disk and a device for driving the same are provided to prevent an objective lens and the high density optical disk from colliding with each other by selectively aborting a focusing servo operation, thereby preventing damage of the objective lens and the high density optical disk, and a fatal error in the servo operation. CONSTITUTION: In a high density optical disk where a high density pit pattern data recording layer is formed mostly on one side from the center of the optical disk thickness, the utmost outer peripheral surface has an asymmetrical structure in a direction of the thickness. A device for driving the high density optical disk includes a detecting element forming a shape corresponding to the utmost outer peripheral surface, a transferring element transferring the detecting element to a position where the high density optical disk is loaded, a switch element selectively being turned on and off according to the movement position of the detecting element, and a control element controlling a servo operation corresponding to the insertion state of the high density optical disk based on the turn-on and turn-off state of the switch element.
