The present invention relates generally to a configurable array of probes fo r assaying targets within a fluid. The probes are contained within optical tra ps which allows for alterations in the selection and re-configuration of the quantity or quality of probes in the array. Moreover, the array is dynamic i n that once configured the optical traps may allow for independent repositioni ng of a given optical trap and contained probe.
