Computer-based method for monitoring material state in a technical plant that processes the material in some way, e.g. monitoring of material level in a storage container. The state is measured using sensors and a text message transferred via a telecommunications network to a monitoring unit. The message is then converted to a second data format that can be processed by a monitoring program. Based on the result of the program an order for further material can be automatically generated if necessary. An Independent claim is made for a material state monitoring system that automatically monitors the state of material used in a process and initiates an action if the measured state requires it.
