Novel topical photoprotectant cosmetic composition contains at least one acrylonitrile amide, sulfonamide or aromatic carbamate derivative. Topical cosmetic composition, particularly for photoprotection of the skin and/or hair, comprises at least one acrylonitrile amide, sulfonamide or aromatic carbamate derivative of formula (I) or (II). X1 = R3C(O)-, R3SO2- or R2OC(O)-; X2 = -C(O)R'3C(O)-, -SO2R'3SO2- or -C(O)-OR'3OC(O)-; Y = -C(O)R4 or -SO2R5; R2 = 1-8C alkyl; n = 0-2; R3 = 1-30C alkyl or 3-30C alkenyl (both optionally substituted by OH and optionally containing one or more heteroatoms selected from O, N or Si, in their chain); R'3 = a bond, 1-30C alkylene or 3-30C alkenylene (both optionally substituted by OH and optionally containing one or more heteroatoms selected from O, N or Si, in their chain); R4 = OR6 or NHR6; R5 = 1-30C alkyl or a phenyl group optionally substituted by 1-4C alkyl or alkoxy; and R6 = 1-30C alkyl or 3-30C alkenyl (both optionally substituted by OH and optionally containing one or more heteroatoms selected from O, N or Si, in their chain).
