PURPOSE: A steering column of a vehicle is provided to prevent a driver from being injured by increasing the distance between a steering wheel and the driver with decreasing the length of the steering column at a collision, and to protect the driver by relieving impact in deploying the airbag. CONSTITUTION: A steering column is composed of a steering shaft(2) mounting a steering wheel(1); a column shaft(3) connected to the steering shaft; a spline shaft(4) connected to the column shaft; a spline tube(5) inserting the spline shaft; a column bracket(8); a lock lever(6) tilting the steering wheel and telescoping; and an air bag(20). A spring(26) is connected to the column shaft to insert the spline shaft to the spline tube by pulling the column shaft in releasing the lock nut. A pneumatic cylinder(22) is actuated by an inflator at a collision, and the lock nut is released by a ratchet arm(25) through a rod(24). The injury of the driver is relieved by reducing the length of the steering column with inserting the spline shaft to the spline tube in contracting the spring.
