A method for attaching a functional element to a sheet-metal part wherein the functional element comprises a head part with an annular-shaped bearing surface and a tubular rivet section extending away from the head part provided on the side of the bearing surface of the head part; in the region of the transition between the head part and the rivet section the bearing surface has an annular-shaped recess with an annular surface which is disposed in an inclined position with respect to the longitudinal axis of the functional element and the depth of the inclined annular surface of the annular-shaped recess is at its largest adjacent to the rivet sections, optionally possessing torsional fixing characteristics, such as locking lugs which are provided in the region of the annular-shaped recess and/or in the region of the transition between the annular-shaped recess and the rivet section and which selectively divide the annular-shaped recess into individual areas disposed about the longitudinal axis of the functional element, characterised in that the functional element is automatically punched into the sheet-metal part by means of a modified clamping hole riveting procedure.
