PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing 1-methyl-5-hydroxypyrazole, capable of easily producing the 1-methyl-5-hydroxypyrazole useful as an intermediate for herbicides at a low cost. SOLUTION: In this method for producing the 1-methyl-5-hydroxypyrazole from a lower-alkoxymethylenemalonic acid di-lower-alkyl ester and methylhydrazine, a lower-alkoxymethylenemalonic acid lower-alkyl ester monoamide is synthesized from the lower-alkoxymethylenemalonic acid di-lower- alkyl ester and ammonia, then the produced lower-alkoxymethylenemalonic acid lower-alkyl ester monoamide is reacted with the methylhydrazine to synthesize a 1-methyl-5-hydroxypyrazole-4-carboxylic acid lower-alkyl ester which is decreased in by-products to have such high quality as never given by conventional methods in a high yield, and further the synthesized product is reacted with an alkali metal hydroxide to produce the 1-methyl-5-hydroxypyrazole.
