A picture display device comprising a cathode ray tube of the index type for producing a single electron beam (7) and having a pattern of index elements and parallel phosphor lines (R,G,B). An index signal is produced during operation. The single electron beam (7) is scanned parallel to and across the phosphor lines and the intensity of the electron beam is maintained substantially constant for each pixel, while the dwell times (tr1, tg1, tb1) on the respective phosphor lines (R,G,B) are chosen to produce the desired color.
