[Also in Division B5] Vibratory apparatus for ultrasonic welding of thermoplastic sheet material includes a vibratory, exponential, tool 10 and an opposed jaw 11. Protrusions are formed in the facing surfaces 12, 13. The tool 10 is vibrated by a piezoelectric transducer (42), Figs. 2, 3 (not shown) energized by an ultrasonic source of fixed frequency. The tool 10 is supported at a node by three screws 17 (see also Fig. 4, not shown) which bite into the side of the tool 10 and are carried in a support-plate 16. Electrical connection from the ultrasonic source to the transducer 42 is via two jacks 34, 35. Jack 34 is connected to a brass disc (32) resting within a rubber cup 30. Between the disc (32) and the transducer 42 is a slightly compressed cylinder of resilient wire mesh (40). The transducer 42 has silver electrodes (43). The upper surface of the transducer 42 and the lower face of the tool 10 are bonded together by epoxy resin (45) in which are silver particles (46). Jack 35 is electrically connected by cable (37) to the support plate 16 and through the screws 17 and conductive epoxy resin (45) to the transducer 42. The transducer may be magnetostrictive (not shown). A blower unit 76 controls the temperature of the vibratory tool 10. Coarse adjustment of the weld gap is effected by unlocking lock member 61 and sliding an arm 60 on a standard 58. Fine adjustment is effected by loosening wing screws 64 and rotating a knurled knob 63 to move a rack 62 in a vertical direction. The rack 62 supports a C-shaped head 68, apertures 71, 72 of which accommodate a rod 73 which carries the jaw 11. A strong spring 75 permits limited upward movement of the jaw 11 if the amplitude of vibration of the tool 10 is too great or if the weld gap has been set inaccurately. An alternative vibratory tool (85), Fig. 5 (not shown), has two oppositely disposed inwardly tapering flat surfaces (86, 87) adjacent the lower end. The upper portion (88) forms an extension and is of rectangular crosssection. The current path from the lower support plate (90) to the transducer (42) is by an epoxy layer (91) in which are distributed silver granules (92), instead of by the resilient wire mesh (40).</p>
