METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR TREATING SEWAGE CONTAINING HARDLY DECOMPOSABLE ORGANIC MATTER

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a treatment method capable of removing hardly decomposable organic matter contained in sewage in a high COD removing ratio without requiring a high treatment cost. SOLUTION: In the sewage treatment method wherein a filled bed of a granular substance is immersed in a liquid and raw water is supplied to the filled bed from the upper or lower part thereof while diffusing oxygen-containing gas into the filled bed from the lower part thereof, electrodes placed in opposed relationship in a non-contact state are arranged to a part of the filled bed and voltage is applied across the electrodes to treat sewage containing the hardly decomposable organic matter. It is preferable not only to apply voltage in a pulse-like state but also to add activated carbon or anthracite to the filled bed.
