A portable milling apparatus used to mill a log which includes; a guide adapted to be attached to a log, the guide including a pair of beams defining a ladder with a plurality of rungs positioned between each of said beams disposed along the length of said beams, and a fixing means adapted to fix a guide on substantially the top and/or the side of a log to be milled, and a carriage adapted to move along the guide and to receive a cutting blade.
