PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a memory management system capable of speeding up a bit map retrieval processing regardless of the necessary size of a bit map area. SOLUTION: When a memory capturing means 100 captures a bit map for the necessary number of bit map areas by targeting a bit map area 112 of a memory 111 through a bit map capturing means 107 when continuous free areas for the necessary number of bit maps are present in response to a memory capture request, a free bit map retrieving means 105 instructed by the memory capturing means 100 quickly executes the bit map retrieval processing for retrieving the free area by retrieving a proper retrieval start position from the notified latest positions by switching to one of a word unit/byte unit/bit unit through a word unit bit map retrieving means 108, a byte unit bit map retrieving means 114, and a bit unit bit map retrieving means 109 according to the necessary size of the bit map area.
