Lactobacteria, particularly Lactobacillus bifidus and/or Lactobacillus acidophilus, are selectively cultured on a succession of nutrient media containing live, killed or inactivated pathogenic bacteria (typhoid, paratyphoid, enteritis, dysentery and/or dyspepsia coli bacteria). The selectively cultured lactobacteria are finally cultured on a pathogen-free nutrient medium having a pulpy or glutinous consistency, based on milk and/or liver, and containing intestinal mucosa. The bacteria are preserved by drying, freezing or freeze-drying, and may be administered in milkbased foodstuffs such as powdered or condensed milk, cream, butter, cheese or yoghurt. |
