The device has a centrifugal separator (13), which divides the combustion air flow (2) into a central core flow with low particle density and a jacket flow with higher particle density. The core flow is guided into the contaminated air chamber (42) of a filter housing (5) and the jacket flow is exhausted via a blower (12), pref. the coolant air blower (18) of the IC engine. The centrifugal separator is a cyclone, esp. and axial cyclone or turbo filter.
