<p>Developed image noise is reduced by momentarily breaking the short range forces holding toner non-uniformly to a charge retentive surface (10) in an electrostatic image. The source of the image noise can be of a mechanical nature, such as, raking by carrier beads in conventional two component development. The short range forces are broken by applying ultrasonic vibration to the charge retentive surface (10).
