PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and a method for determining a relative registration offset in a medium advance direction of printing heads of a printer. SOLUTION: The method for determining the registration offset in a hard copy apparatus provided with a pen arranged to mark a printing medium and a sensor arranged to detect marks on the medium along a sensor path includes a step of marking an alignment pattern at least partially located along the sensor path onto the medium, a step of measuring a position along the sensor path of a part of the pattern, and a step of determining the offset in the perpendicular direction from the sensor path of the pattern. The pattern is configured such that the measured position is indicative of the registration offset.
