PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tunneling machine which allows an undermining ditch to be excavated in a multi-centered circle shape by a chain cutter for excavation of the undermining ditch at a time, without performing extra chipping work, placing lining concrete or making the undermining ditch twisted, in a flat-section type tunnel having the multi-centered circle shape. SOLUTION: A cutter sliding mechanism 13, which is equipped with a hydraulic cylinder 7 for elevation and a hydraulic cylinder 25 for vertical adjustment, is provided in the front of a cutter traverse gear 3. Telescoping a piston 8b of the cylinder 7 puts the chain cutter 4 for the excavation of the undermining ditch 5 in elevating motion toward the undermining ditch 5. In addition, telescoping a piston 26b of the cylinder 25 makes a sliding frame 27 slide upward and downward, and makes the chain cutter 4 undergo vertical parallel displacement toward the undermining ditch 5. The elevating motion and vertical parallel displacement of the chain cutter 4 bring about the excavation of the highly accurate undermining ditch 5.
