An electrical cardiac pacer for implanting in the body comprises a stimulation circuit within a casing 10 and responsive to pulses received from the heart by a sensing electrode 37, a stimulating electrode 35 or 36, and a return electrode 12 which has a larger surface area than the other electrodes, the connections between the circuit and the electrodes being of such extent that the return electrode may be located remote from the other two electrodes. The stimulating electrodes and the sensing electrodes are sutured to the heart and the return electrode 12 forms a cover for the plastic casing of the circuit which is placed in the abdomen. One of a pair of stimulating electrodes and the sensing electrode are connected to the circuit by a reversible plug and socket connection in one position, the other stimulating electrode and the sensing electrode being connected to the circuit when the plug and socket connection is in its other position. The stimulating and sensing electrodes comprise silicone rubber tabs having apertures for suturing to the heart and contact members formed by platimum wire coils or loops. The device may be used for repetitive stimulation of body tissue other than cardiac tissue.
