Device comprises a gutter (31) for collecting ink drops (30) that have not been used in printing. The gutter has an impact wall (32) that connects directly to an evacuation hole (36) and is sloped to assist a quick and controlled collection of the ink without entrainment of air. An electric resistance sensor is placed in the collection hole to determined the ink characteristics and control suction. An Independent claim is made for a method for collecting excess ink arising from printing.
