A video signal processing device and method utilizes SDRAM for video fra me memory. Incoming words are reformatted for a first word width to a second wo rd width to make more efficient use of the memory capacity and the speed of commercially available SDRAMS. In the preferred embodiment time-division multiplexing distributes clocked data bursts amongst read, write and SDRAM refresh functions.
