[Also in Division G6] In an echo-sounder for indicating the position of the control rods in a nuclear reactor, wave energy is transmitted down a hollow acoustic wave-guide and is reflected from a shutter which blocks off the guide at the position to be indicated. The guide comprises a string of flexibly jointed short tubes 7a . . . 7d spaced from the wall of a non- magnetic protective tube 15 by spacers 11, 12. The tube 15 is placed inside a reactor vessel (19) (Fig. 1) and runs parallel to vertically slidable control rods 21. Shutters are provided at intervals along the guide (e.g. in each or every other tube 7) and each comprises a plate 9, carried on spring strips 10, which can be moved into a slot 18 in the tube 7 to block off the tube, a strip 14 of magnetic material being attached to a pair of the spring strips 10. A magnet 16, mounted on the upper end of a control rod 21, co-operates with the strip 14 to actuate a shutter. An ultrasonic transmitter-receiver is coupled to the upper end of the wave-guide and is used as an echo-sounder to indicate which shutter has been actuated, the read-out being presented in digital form, on a dial with a pointer, or on a recording instrument. The flexible string of tubes 7 may be replaced by a straight, rigid tube.
