A marine propeller shaft has a bearing sleeve in one piece or integral therewith. As shown contra-rotating propellers 2a, 2b are driven by co-axial shafts 6, 19 which are respectively formed in one piece with a bearing sleeve 4 supporting the shaft 6 in the stern 1 of a ship, and made integral, as by shrinking and fusion, with a journal 26 which is supported within the outer shaft 6 by a needle bearing 27. A vibration damper may be provided on the forward end of the sleeve 4 or in the annular space between the sleeve and the shaft 6. The propeller 2a is secured to the sleeve 4 by bolts 18 and circumferential play prevented by dowels 21. The propeller 2b is secured axially to the shaft 19 by a central bolt which may extend through the length of the shaft 19 to maintain it in axial compression. Torque is transmitted to the propeller by interengaging facial teeth on the propeller hub and on a flange of the shaft 19.</p> |
