PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical disk device which can read an emboss area signal in the common part of recording formats of a disk without using a high- resolution and high-precision positioning mechanism. SOLUTION: The optical disk device characteristically comprises a zone- judging part 35 that judges which zone an optical pickup head (PUH) 14 lies in, the rewritable data zone or emboss data zone of the optical disk 11, from an optical disk-reproducing signal obtained by radiating a beam spot from the optical pickup head (PUH) 14, a tracking-control part 37 which moves the PUH 14 toward the inner circumference of the optical disk in the direction of the radius of the optical disk until the zone-judging part 35 judges that the PUH 14 lies in the rewritable zone and a data-processing part 38 which reads the data recorded in the emboss zone concerned when the zone-judging part 35 judges that the PUH 14 lies in the emboss zone.
